Characters, Corvids and more

I have a love of crows, ravens, and rooks, well all corvids really. I grew up listening to them cawing across fields and up in the tops of great tall trees in England. I have gone back to painting and drawing them many times, I love the way they walk and look at you with a beady eye. I recently went back to England to spend valuable time with my mum and family. Not that far from Hampshire is Wiltshire and Stonehenge. After an endless traffic jam, I spent an afternoon gazing at the stone circle and the ravens spent the afternoon gazing back from lintels. The crows and ravens have lived amongst the stone circle for centuries and are considered ‘guardians of the stones’. It’s a lonely windswept place but they love it and survive. There is a feeling up there it is calm and peaceful, I can understand why people have been drawn to the stones for a very, very long time.

After many photos I will be drawing and creating characters which I hope to share in the future. For more inspiration I turn to the master of characterful corvid drawings and Arthur Rackham. His work is beautiful and slightly unsettling, just the right amount of darkness and magic. If you are unfamiliar with his work google him!
